Recap: Spatial + Felix Media + Sonance = SXSW

South by Southwest (SXSW) 2022 has come and gone. Austin’s own Felix Media Solutions (FMS) completed a full audio-visual integration to enable the Spatial Holodeck, including a fully immersive and transformational soundscape powered by Spatial’s unique technology.

With AV by FMS, hardware provided by Sonance and James Loudspeaker, fabrication by Pink Sparrow, and an experience by Meow Wolf located right next door, this event was one for the record books! The Spatial Holodeck, located at the Sunset Room (310 E. 3rd St.), played host to several events, including a collaboration with the National Geographic Society.

A third Austin location, Wanderlust Wine Co. located at 702 Shady Lane, featured the Spatial Creator Lab and included a permanent installation guests of the indoor, self-serve style taproom can visit any time.

And speaking of record books, an internal record was set by FMS staff during the install: most cable pulled for a single project, with a total of 35,000 feet - roughly the cruising altitude of a full-sized airplane.

Killian Ivy, who served as the FMS Project Manager, said the most difficult thing about working across the project’s three job sites (the Spatial Holodeck, the Meow Wolf experience, and the Wanderlust location) was “making sure that what we need to be at each job site and when” was present. This was complicated by several factors: the Meow Wolf experience was housed in a temporary structure, the Sunset Room and Wanderlust continued to operate as normal during the course of the installation, which limited the hours work could be done, and there were only 18 days total to complete the entire integration across the three locations.

Over the 18-day installation period, 15 FMS employees contributed approximately 800 hours of labor, from tasks encompassing mounting speakers to project management. The company installed approximately 350 Sonance speakers, including wall-mounted and pendant speakers and subwoofers mounted in rafters and on the ground to support the immersive audio programmed by Spatial. Five fully-loaded racks were constructed and commissioned, allowing for superior control of the installed systems.

Each site presented its own unique challenges.

The Meow Wolf experience, erected in what is normally a parking lot, was housed in a temporary structure with limited availability for each trade to complete their own complicated installation. This included drapers, lighting experts, FMS technicians, and the creative team at Meow Wolf, each needing special and sometimes large equipment like lifts to reach the high ceiling. Each team had to be carefully sequenced and complete their work quickly and flawlessly for the event to come together.  From installation to event, the construction of the finished space was tight, leaving little wiggle room for testing.

“We had a lot of surprises that popped up. That’s just part of supporting large live events like this one. It takes experienced installers who know how to adjust and figure it out as they go to complete this particular task on time,” said FMS Vice-President of Operations Ben Lanclos. “We have a local team of highly-trained professionals. I’m particularly grateful for their flexibility and problem-solving skills. There were a lot of late nights to get this done.”

The Wanderlust location, too, came with unique challenges.

“The walls were covered in incredible mural art, and the largest wall was criss-crossed on its back with lines supporting the wine taps. We had to drill holes to support speakers. One wrong move would have spelled disaster for the client,” Lanclos said. “Additionally, you have the challenge of placement. How do you balance function and aesthetics in a space with an established character?”

In addition to Ivy, the FMS crew was led by Field Operations Manager Justin Bryant and Senior Site Lead Russel Thompson. Lanclos thanked his team, saying “without [their] full commitment, this project would not have been possible.”

This video was produced for Spatial by Taylor Nolen and Geoffrey Gan of Xi Media Productions.

AUDIO-VISUAL INTEGRATOR FELIX MEDIA SOLUTIONS MAKES AUSTIN BUSINESS JOURNAL’S LIST OF TECH EMPLOYERS

The Austin Business Journal named local audio-visual integrator Felix Media Solutions (FMS) to #81 on Austin’s Tech Employers List. The list ranks Austin-area companies by the number of jobs they provide to residents who work in the technology goods or services sector.

FMS, three-time Inc. 5000 member and Texas’ fastest-growing AV integrator, employs 24 local professionals, from field technicians to programmers, site leads and managers. One thing that unites them?

Technical mastery, according to FMS CEO Lionel Felix.

“FMS has been translating technical mastery into smart, easy-to-use, and scalable audio-visual solutions since 2015. The FMS team brings a combined 60 years of experience in managing end-to-end audio visual projects from conception [...] through budgeting, product selection, installation, and management to post-installation support,” he wrote in a letter to his employees.

Founded by self-described “IT nerds, ” Felix described the company as designed to succeed where others failed by prioritizing the functionality and ease of use of custom-designed AV solutions that fuse cutting-edge technology with a premium client experience.  But that’s not all Felix set out to do.

“When we created [FMS], we did so because we knew it was possible to do great work, pay people well, and build a company where people are valued,” he wrote.  Those values and that strategy propelled FMS from Felix’s “side hustle” to a leading integrator offering AV systems design and integration, security systems design and installation, access control, sound masking, digital signage and more.

Despite the challenging business environment of the immediate post-COVID landscape, a focus on “people first” hasn’t changed.

“We don’t want to be just any employer,” said FMS Director of Personnel and Communications Caroline Brewton. “We want to be a good employer. Here, we don’t just think it’s possible to prioritize your team AND your clients, we know it is - and our success has borne out that philosophy.”

Fastest-Growing AV Integrator Felix Media Solutions Acquires Texas Security Solutions Provider Big Star Security, Owner Hired to Head Felix Media Security Department

Austin, TX - Inc. 5000 company and Texas' fastest-growing AV integrator Felix Media Solutions Inc. (FMS) has expanded its service offerings to include security systems design and integration after acquiring regional security dealer Big Star Security, LLC. FMS hired Big Star’s owner, Scott Zuniga, to serve as the FMS Director of Security Sales.

Zuniga has 17 years of experience in the industry, having spent most of his career focused on designing and implementing service programs that provide superior peace-of-mind to clients with security needs.

"The last few years of Big Star's business was focused on helping our clients migrate their legacy alarm, access control and camera systems to the Cloud,” Zuniga said. “Joining forces with [FMS] allows us to continue this mission on a larger scale."

FMS CEO Lionel Felix said he noticed that adding security design and installation services helps FMS in its goal to provide simple, stress-free and easy-to-use solutions for clients from inception to integration.

“I think with the rise in crime lately - especially locally - there has been an urgent demand for service,” Felix said. “Security systems integration is a natural outgrowth of our existing technical knowledge and a great way for us to do what we do best - help our clients.”

Citing his deep client base and expertise, Felix said Zuniga was “the perfect choice” to help FMS develop its roster of security services.

“He’s been a hands-on team member, helping to grow the skill base of our work force and challenging us to grow in new directions from a system-design perspective. I can’t wait to see where this takes us.”

Felix Media Solutions CEO Lionel Felix talks Total Tech Summit (TTS) and More in the January Issue of Commercial Integrator Magazine

Felix Media Solutions (FMS) CEO Lionel Felix recently spoke with  Commercial Integrator magazine about his recent experience at the Total Tech Summit (TTS) held in Orlando, Florida.

Citing the event as a valuable opportunity to catch up with key suppliers, industry partners, new vendors and other commercial audio-visual enthusiasts, Felix said, “My peers [and I] get to talk about things no one else [we] grew up with or are married to can really relate to.”

Felix called it “a real treat” to catch up with old friends at the event in addition to creating new relationships to carry the Austin-based company forward, noting a new partnership with Sharp NEC Display Solutions.

At the event, Felix joined other panelists on stage to discuss “Digital AV: The IT Side of AV.” Felix drew on the success of FMS as well as his own experience in the IT industry before making the leap to commercial AV to share his expertise on issues such as cybersecurity, networking, working from home, and AVoIP. In fact, FMS was started with the goal of merging IT experience and AV design to create a seamless client experience, Felix said.

“Felix Media Solutions was started by IT people who looked at [common AV solutions] in conference rooms and said, ‘There has to be a better way.’ We’re able to take on some of the biggest projects in Austin with a focus on conference, all-hands, and training rooms across all types of UC platforms” because of this knowledge, he explained.

He went on to say one benefit to clients that FMS offers because of that mastery is simplicity; FMS examines potential IT issues in its AV design solutions to improve the user experience and user interface, allowing the client to use the fullest functionality of their space with the least trouble. “We really put a premium on client experience,” he said.

This year’s TTS event was in-person, something Felix said he found crucial to nurturing working relationships. “We really get to dive in. It just isn’t the same over Zoom,” he said. “[Attending] TTS is part of what makes Felix Media Solutions a leader.”

Austin AV Integrator Felix Media Solutions Helps Raise More Than $10,000 for Local Charity Austin Wildlife Rescue on Giving Tuesday

It’s easy to make a big difference for the smallest among us. And by that, we really mean small.

Austin’s native wildlife, like the baby opossum pictured, have been brought to rehabbers in all shapes and sizes. But those animals all have something in common - they need our help.

This year, Felix Media Solutions (FMS) decided to help by sponsoring local wildlife rehabilitation charity Austin Wildlife Rescue’s  “Critter Power Hour,” offering to match up to $5000 in donations made from 8-9 PM on Giving Tuesday. Thanks to the support of generous contributors and members of the Central Texas community, that effort helped to raise more than $10,000 for the organization.

“Funds from this event help us feed and care for these animals and also help us restock for baby season in the early spring. We have to have the formula, medication, and supplies ahead of time because the animals start pouring in all at once,” said Austin Wildlife Rescue Executive Director Hayley Hudnall.

Giving Tuesday, often styled as #GivingTuesday on social media, occurs the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, that day fell on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Giving Tuesday is a movement that sprang up in the wake of Black Friday as a meaningful antidote to consumerism and is meant to encourage charitable giving during the holiday season.

For nonprofits like Austin Wildlife Rescue and the vulnerable animals they care for, the support can be lifesaving.

“Giving Tuesday is so important for AWR,” said Hudnall. “ We continue to care for hundreds of injured wild animals in the winter months with much less revenue. [...]  We truly appreciate FMS offering a matching donation during our Critter Power Hour this year. Our supporters always love when we have a match because they know their donation will go twice as far to help the animals.”

FMS has partnered with Austin Wildlife Rescue since 2019, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Austinites in and outside the office. That’s the year the local charity opened a new facility  to accommodate the growing needs of Austin’s wildlife. Previously, the nonprofit operated from a three-bedroom home in Austin, with support from local rehabbers who took animals into their own homes. 6.7 acres were purchased in Elgin to house the growing facility and improve upon the organization’s ability to offer care. Despite the new space, the move came with challenges.

“When we had run out of options and didn’t know how (or if) we would have internet at our new rehabilitation facility, FMS offered to help! We would be extremely limited without internet access, so FMS made it possible and donated their time and talents. Since then, they have continued to support AWR in other technical capacities and fundraisers,” said Hudnall.

FMS’s support for Austin Wildlife Rescue is a cornerstone of its efforts to build a better Austin.

CEO Lionel Felix stresses that a path to the sustainable growth of Austin rests on maintaining the quality of life of all Austinites - two-footed or four-footed.

“FMS was founded on principles of giving back to the community and making Austin the best it can be for our clients and neighbors, both through the work we do and through what we do beyond work,” Felix said. “As our community grows and new development occurs, we are displacing wildlife and that wildlife sometimes gets into trouble. Wildlife is a big part of what makes Texas beautiful and unique. It’s a responsibility and a privilege to continue to support the sustainable development of Austin by making sure to support efforts like these.”

Felix Media Solutions Vice President of Operations Ben Lanclos Shares Advantages to Working with Veterans

Veterans Day is celebrated to appreciate those who have served in the U.S. military. The federal holiday is always observed on November 11, in honor of the day an armistice went into effect between the U.S.-led Allied Nations and German forces. Though WWI wasn’t technically over until the Treaty of Versailles was signed seven months later, Nov. 11 is recognized as the end of the “war to end all wars,” according to history from the Veterans Administration.

With a workforce comprising approximately ten percent veterans, Austin-area AV integrator Felix Media Solutions (FMS) knows the value in appreciating and including those who have served their country.

“Veterans have plenty of experience working with diverse groups of individuals as a team to accomplish objectives. Additionally, veterans are taught to be small group leaders from the start,” said FMS Vice President of Operations Ben Lanclos, himself a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. This type of experience is particularly valuable to an audio-visual integrator, as members of the field team are often split into small groups to complete different projects across Austin - and even across America. The ability to pull together those with different skills and abilities is incredibly important to the completion of any commercial construction project, with AV being no exception, he said.

Additionally, the critical-thinking skills and problem-solving abilities those who formerly served bring to the table is yet another benefit to hiring veterans, with each project bringing new challenges for the company to think through and execute. Not to mention the soft-skills necessary to any job.

“Showing up and being a team player with a willingness to lead are transferable traits any veteran can bring to the table,” Lanclos said.

Asked if he has any advice for those transitioning out of the military and looking for a job in the civilian world, Lanclos recommended taking full advantage of any G.I. Bill benefits to broaden their skill base before entering the workforce.

Ben Lanclos serves as the Vice President of Operations for Felix Media Solutions. He received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army after attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class as a member of the Green Berets. He lives in Austin with his wife and dog.

Felix Media Solutions to Match Donations Made to Austin Wildlife Rescue 11/9/21

Felix Media Solutions (FMS), a commercial AV integrator and designer in Austin, has pledged to match up to $5,000 in donations made to Austin Wildlife Rescue on November 9, 2021. Austin Wildlife Rescue is an organization that rehabilitates and releases orphaned, injured, and sick wild animals and educates the public to coexist with wildlife. This effort is crucial to conservation efforts in Central Texas. “As we grow, we are displacing wildlife and that wildlife sometimes gets into trouble,” says FMS Founder and CEO Lionel Felix. “Wildlife is a big part of what makes Texas beautiful and unique.” A commitment to maintaining Austin’s green space and iconic species remains a key part of FMS’ ethos, and CEO Lionel Felix stresses that a path to the sustainable growth of Austin rests on maintaining the quality of life of all Austinites - two-footed or four-footed. “FMS was founded on principles of giving back to the community and making Austin the best it can be for our clients and neighbors, both through the work we do and through what we do beyond work - putting our money where our mouth is where it comes to making Austin better.”

Felix Media Solutions Makes the Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America List for Third Year in a Row in 2021

Inc. 5000.jpg

Every year, Inc. 5000 recognizes the fastest-growing private companies in America, and Felix Media Solutions made the list for the third time! This growth comes despite the massive public health crisis presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, political and social unrest, price increases and supply chain issues, and the personnel challenges that come with the COVID-19 outbreak in Austin and the emergence of the Delta variant.

According to Inc. 5000, merely 12 percent of the tens of thousands of companies that have applied to the list have been featured three times.

A big “congratulations” is due the FMS team, without whom this growth would not be possible. The challenges of the year have touched nearly every position at the company, from employees caring for sick relatives, to being affected by the citywide lockdown, to quarantining due to exposure.
